BUILDING OFFICIAL

Job Summary:  The Town of New Shoreham, Rhode Island is looking for an experienced and State Certified Building Official to lead our fast-paced Building Department.  The duties and responsibilities of the Building Official generally include the issuance of all electrical, mechanical and plumbing  permits with a complete understanding of all aspects of the construction industry, especially coastal construction, septic systems, drainage systems and soil erosion controls.  Working experience in fire safety codes and disaster mitigation/response would be helpful. 

The Building Official is also the Zoning Official, which is responsible for administrating and enforcing the Town’s Zoning Ordinance.  The Building Official is trained by Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and Rhode Island Emergency Management Agency (RIEMA) and appointed by the Town to be the local Floodplain Manager. The Building Official is certified and trained by FEMA and the State Building Commission to lead the Rapid Building Assessment Team in times of disaster.  Building Official works with the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM) and Coastal Resources Management Council (CRMC) to ensure state and local laws are adhered to.

The ideal candidate must be able to perform comprehensive review of construction plans for compliance with Land Use and building codes, must possess algebra, computer skills and good writing skills, must be able to prepare legal notices, violation notices and zoning certificates.  The Building Official is expected to process and issues permits, certificates and correspondence in a professional and a timely fashion with an ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public, Town officials, other departments and agencies, and office staff.  The position requires the exercise of good judgment to interpret guidelines and carry out assignments independently.

Minimum Qualifications:  Minimum high school diploma, college or technical school education and training in architecture or civil or structural engineering is preferred.  A comprehensive knowledge and expertise in Rhode Island residential and commercial building codes, plumbing codes, electrical codes, mechanical codes, fuel gas code, and energy conservation code is expected.  Must be a Rhode Island State Certified Building Official with a minimum of  5 years of direct experience with a comprehensive knowledge of the building trades and modern practices, principles, materials and tools used during building construction.  General understanding of land use and environmental law and proficient in legal aspects of Code Enforcement is desired.  The selected applicant must possess and maintain a valid Rhode Island driver’s license. 

This is a full-time position with a salary range of $45,000 to $68,000
