Public Safety Dispatch: 24 hours per week;   Sunday 4:00 AM -8:00 AM

 Monday 12:00 AM-8:00 AM

 Thursday 8:00 AM-4:00 PM

 Friday 8:00 AM-12:00 PM


(there may be times where additional fill-in shifts may become available to cover vacations or other

approved leave by members within dispatch).


Union Position:  (This position is affiliated with Council 94 and is classified as Labor Grade C and Step 1 starts at $16.06 per hour.  Upon successful completion of a six-month probationary period, a step increase is possible). Single benefits eligible.  


Must be at least 18 years of age, have a High School Diploma or GED equivalent, and be a United States citizen. 


The Public Safety Dispatch uses a specialized Windows-based computer-aided dispatch software application, receives emergency calls from the public requesting police, fire, medical or other emergency services, determines the nature and location of the emergency, determines priorities, and dispatches police, fire, and/or rescue as necessary and in accordance with established procedures. The Dispatcher receives and processes 911 emergency calls, maintains contact with all units on assignment, maintains status and location of police and fire units, monitors direct emergency alarms, and answers non-emergency calls for assistance.  The Dispatcher enters, updates and retrieves information from a variety of computer systems, including processing requests for information regarding vehicle registration, driving records and warrants, and providing pertinent data.  The Dispatcher also monitors multiple public safety radio frequencies and operates a variety of communications equipment, including radio consoles, telephones and computer systems.



Requirements:  Minimum technology skills required include the following. Proficiency with Windows 7/10 computing environments, Microsoft Office 2010/2013, general data entry/word processing and typing.  Prior experience with law enforcement and dispatch software applications preferred, including RI Law Enforcement Telecommunications System (RILETS), any Computer Aided Dispatch and Incident Reporting System (e.g. CARS, ARMS, or IMC), and Fire Alarm Monitoring System (Digitize 3505 System and Remote Annunciator application).  Excellent written and oral communication skills required for logging essential incident data, interfacing with the public and operating UHF/VHF radio systems.  The ability to multi-task with disparate technology solutions, telephone and radio communications, public safety personnel and the walk-in public is essential.    Interested persons need to indicate experience relative to each of these requirements in their application.
