Job Title:              Recreation Department Assistant                                                            


Full Time Position: 40 hours per week with family benefits  (may have to work nights and weekends)


Union Position:  (This position is affiliated with Council 94 and Classified as a Grade D and   Step 1 starts at $17.21 per hour.  Upon successful completion of a six-month probationary period, a step and pay increase  is possible).


Position Description:   Under the supervision of the Director of Recreation:  assists in developing, coordinating, and supervising a variety of comprehensive community recreation, social, health wellness, and cultural programs for all age groups.


Essential Job Functions:  In concert with, and under the direction of the Recreation Director may perform the following:

             Provide general customer information.  This will include disseminating information related to the department’s programs, youth sports leagues and other community events

             Process class registrations.  This will include a thorough working knowledge of the RecPro registration system and contacting participants regarding updates.

             Coordinate Camp Mohegan program.  This will include the training and supervision of staff, the coordination of programs and special events and the overseeing of the day-to day operation of the programs.

             Plan, coordinate and evaluate school vacation/days off programs for elementary students.  This will include program development, staff recruitment, training and supervision.  The program will include games, contests, open-gym time, field trips and special events.

             Assists in recruiting, hiring, training, supervising, and evaluating part time, seasonal employees, volunteers, and program instructors. 

             Assists in organizing and scheduling leagues and special events.

             Maintains records and prepares reports on recreation programs as directed.

             Recommends program supplies and equipment.

             Supervises and implements programs and services as assigned by the Recreation Director

             Oversees collection of fees from programs and prepares deposits.

             Develops and handles public relations and interest with program brochures, fliers, press releases, and posters.

             Prepares statistical and narrative reports.

             Coordinates activities with public and private organizations.

             Maintain an inventory of program equipment and supplies.

             Performs related work as required or requested by the Recreation Director.

             Available to work weekends and evenings.

             May assume the Recreation Director’s responsibilities during temporary absence as approved by the Town Manager.

             May perform additional job functions, tasks and duties as necessary and/ or requested.


Skills and Requirements

             Commitment to excellence in customer service; good rapport with all ages.

             Knowledge of objectives and mission of the Recreation Department.

             Knowledge of methods and techniques involved in researching, planning, organizing, implementing a variety of recreation programs and activities.

             Knowledge of policies and procedures relating to staffing and directing recreational activities.

             Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

             Ability to act calmly and effectively in emergency situations.

             Proficient with word processing, presentation, databases, and spreadsheet programs.

             Ability to exercise good judgment and carry out assignments independently.

             Physical activity required.

             Flexibility in work week hours (evenings or weekends based on programming needs).


Required Minimum Qualifications

             College degree preferred with degree in Parks and Recreation Administration or a related field.  Related experiences may suffice.

License or Certificate

             Must possess and maintain a valid Rhode Island Motor Vehicle Operators license and vehicle for performance of job functions.
