Spotlight on Hazard Mitigation and Flood Protection - 12/21/20

New Shoreham is vulnerable to many hazards, including hurricanes, thunderstorms, high winds, winter realted hazards, flood related hazards and coastal erosion, among others

The Block Island Hazard Mitigation Plan was adopted by the Town Council on July 5, 2017 and approved by FEMA on July 27, 2017.  We welcome members of the community to read the plan, available through the link above or printed copy at Town Hall or the Library.

NFIP (National Flood Insurance Program)

In 2019, The Town of New Shoreham gained entrance to the NFIP’s Community Rating System (CRS) program.  Participation within this program demonstrates the Town’s commitment to floodplain management, property protection and public safety and grants New Shoreham property owners a discount on their flood insurance premiums. Eligible activities that the Town undertakes and receives CRS credit includes, but is not limited to, local hazard mitigation planning, mapping, public information and outreach efforts, stormwater management, and open space preservation.  As a Class 8 CRS community, New Shoreham policyholders in special flood hazard areas are eligible to receive a 10% discount on their flood insurance premium and policyholders in zones outside of special flood hazard areas are eligible to receive a 5% discount on their flood insurance premium.
