New Shoreham Police Department launches text-a-tip program

Text NSPDTIP to 847411 to share information

The New Shoreham Police Department today launched its text-a-tip program that allows the public to provide information to the police anonymously by sending a secure text message.

“With such a small department, we rely on the public to be our “eyes and ears.” This program lets us receive tips electronically which frees up our dispatchers to focus on more urgent calls,” said Matthew C. Moynihan, Chief of Police for the Town of New Shoreham. “As we continue to innovate and update our approach to policing, it is important that we understand our small community. We hope that creating an anonymous and direct channel of communication will encourage people to share information with us.”

To share a tip with the New Shoreham Police Department, send a text to 847411. In the body of the text, type NSPDTIP and the tip you want to share (see attached example). In an emergency, please dial 911 or dispatch at 466-3220.

The platform used by New Shoreham is called tip411 and is used in more than 1,200 communities throughout the United States. The tips are received by the department in real-time and can be responded to via an interface that allows for secure web and text-based conversations.  The tip411 system is 100% anonymous, as its technology removes all identifying information before it is received by the department.

“Using technology as a force-multiplier is a must-do for our department and we look forward to implementing additional tools in the coming months to streamline our operations and to better meet the needs of our residents,” Chief Moynihan added.
